Consolidation

Combining multiple smaller shipments from different shippers into one larger shipment to achieve lower transport rates and more efficient use of vehicle or container capacity.

Definition

Consolidation is the practice of grouping several less-than-container-load (LCL) or less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments into a single container or truck. A freight forwarder or consolidator collects goods from multiple shippers, packs them together, and ships them as one unit to the destination, where they are deconsolidated and distributed to individual consignees.

Why It Matters

Consolidation makes international shipping accessible and affordable for businesses that do not have enough cargo to fill an entire container. Instead of paying for a full container load (FCL), shippers pay only for the space their goods occupy within a shared container. This is particularly valuable for small and medium importers in Qatar who bring in diverse product ranges from multiple suppliers.

Types

Buyer's consolidation groups shipments from different suppliers destined for the same buyer. Origin consolidation combines goods from multiple shippers at an origin warehouse for shared transport. In-transit consolidation merges shipments at an intermediate hub. Cross-dock consolidation sorts inbound shipments and reconsolidates them by destination for outbound delivery.
