LCL (Less than Container Load)

A shipment smaller than a full container, consolidated with other shippers' cargo in a shared container to reduce shipping costs.

Definition

Less than Container Load shipping is used when a shipper does not have enough cargo to fill an entire container. The goods are delivered to a container freight station (CFS) at the origin, where they are consolidated with other shippers' cargo into a shared container. At the destination CFS, the container is opened and individual consignments are separated (deconsolidated) for delivery to their respective consignees.

Why It Matters

LCL makes ocean shipping accessible to businesses of all sizes. A small importer in Qatar bringing in 5 cubic metres of goods from China does not need to pay for a full 33-cubic-metre container — they pay only for the space their cargo occupies. This democratises international trade, allowing small and medium enterprises to import directly rather than relying on local distributors.

LCL Trade-Offs

While LCL is cheaper for small volumes, it has drawbacks: longer transit times (waiting for consolidation and deconsolidation adds days), higher handling risk (goods are loaded and unloaded at CFS facilities alongside other cargo), and less schedule flexibility (LCL services may have fixed weekly sailing schedules). For shipments approaching half a container, comparing LCL and FCL rates often reveals that FCL is more cost-effective.
