FCL (Full Container Load)

A shipment where a single shipper fills and pays for an entire shipping container, used when cargo volume is sufficient to justify exclusive container use.

Definition

Full Container Load means one shipper's goods occupy an entire container. The shipper loads (stuffs) the container at their premises or a nominated location, and it travels sealed from origin to destination without being opened for consolidation with other shippers' goods. The shipper pays a flat rate per container regardless of whether it is completely full, so maximising container utilisation is important.

Why It Matters

FCL is the most cost-effective ocean shipping method for medium to large volumes. Because the container is sealed at origin and only opened at the destination, goods face less handling risk and lower damage probability compared to LCL. FCL also offers faster transit — no waiting for consolidation at origin or deconsolidation at destination. For regular importers in Qatar, FCL shipments from Asia typically take 15 to 25 days port to port.

When to Choose FCL

FCL becomes more economical than LCL when a shipment fills roughly half a container or more. Below that threshold, LCL is usually cheaper. The break-even point depends on commodity type, origin, and current market rates. Other factors favouring FCL include cargo that is fragile (less handling), high-value (sealed security), or oversized (needs the full container space).
