Backhaul

The return journey of a delivery vehicle carrying cargo back to its point of origin or a hub, rather than returning empty.

Definition

Backhaul refers to using a vehicle's return trip to transport goods rather than running empty. After delivering a load from point A to point B, the vehicle picks up a new load at or near point B for transport back to point A or another nearby destination. This transforms an otherwise unproductive journey into a revenue-generating trip.

Why It Matters

Empty return trips are one of the biggest inefficiencies in trucking. Industry data suggests that 20 to 30 percent of truck kilometres are driven empty. Effective backhaul planning reduces transport costs per delivery, lowers the carbon footprint per unit shipped, and improves fleet utilisation. In Qatar's compact geography, backhaul opportunities are numerous — a truck delivering to Al Khor from Doha can collect goods from a supplier in the northern industrial areas for the return journey.

Challenges

Backhaul scheduling requires coordination between the vehicle's availability window, the pickup location's readiness, and cargo compatibility. A frozen goods truck cannot backhaul ambient cargo without temperature compromise. Digital freight platforms and transport management systems help match available backhaul capacity with shippers who need transport in the return direction.
