FTL (Full Truckload)

A shipment that fills an entire truck trailer, transported directly from origin to destination without stops for other pickups or deliveries.

Definition

Full Truckload shipping means the shipper has enough cargo to fill (or pay for) an entire truck trailer. The vehicle is loaded at the origin, drives directly to the destination, and unloads — with no intermediate stops for picking up or delivering other shippers' goods. This differs from LTL (less than truckload) where multiple shippers' goods share a single truck with multiple stops.

Why It Matters

FTL offers faster transit times (direct routing with no stops), lower damage risk (no intermediate handling or co-loading), and better cost efficiency for large volumes. In Qatar, FTL is the standard for B2B distribution of full-pallet quantities — warehouse replenishment, construction material delivery, and inter-facility transfers. For international road transport within the GCC, FTL is common for shipments between Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

When to Choose FTL

FTL becomes more economical than LTL when a shipment fills roughly half a truck or more. Below that, LTL is usually cheaper per unit because the cost is shared. Other factors favouring FTL include time sensitivity (no waiting for consolidation), fragile or high-value cargo (no co-loading risk), and temperature-controlled shipments where the entire vehicle must be at one temperature.
