Dry Van

A standard enclosed trailer without temperature control, used for transporting non-perishable, weather-sensitive freight on roads.

Definition

A dry van is the most common type of truck trailer used in road freight. It is a fully enclosed rectangular box mounted on a wheeled chassis, protecting cargo from rain, sun, and dust but without any heating or cooling capability. Dry vans are used for general cargo — consumer goods, electronics, packaged foods, building materials, and manufactured products that do not require temperature control.

Why It Matters

Dry vans represent the largest segment of road freight capacity worldwide. Their standardised dimensions allow efficient loading of palletised cargo and maximise payload within legal weight and dimension limits. In Qatar, dry van trucks (typically 3-tonne and 7-tonne box trucks) handle the majority of domestic distribution — from industrial areas to retail outlets, construction sites, and residential deliveries.

Dry Van vs Reefer

The key distinction is temperature control. A dry van offers no climate management — interior temperatures reflect ambient conditions. A reefer (refrigerated) van maintains a specific temperature range using an onboard refrigeration unit. In Qatar's summer, when ambient temperatures exceed 45 degrees Celsius, goods sensitive to heat (certain chemicals, cosmetics, chocolates) may require reefer transport even if they are not technically perishable.
