Container Freight Station (CFS)

A facility where loose cargo is consolidated into containers for export or deconsolidated from containers after import.

Definition

A container freight station, or CFS, is a warehouse or designated area — typically located near a port or inland depot — where less-than-container-load (LCL) shipments are handled. For exports, the CFS receives loose cargo from multiple shippers and consolidates it into full containers. For imports, the CFS receives full containers and breaks them down into individual consignments for delivery to multiple consignees.

Why It Matters

Not every shipper has enough cargo to fill an entire container. A CFS enables small and medium businesses to access international shipping by combining their goods with other shippers' cargo. This is particularly relevant in Qatar where many importers bring in diverse product ranges in quantities that do not justify full container loads.

CFS vs CY

A container freight station handles loose cargo — goods are loaded into or unloaded from containers at the facility. A container yard (CY) handles full containers that arrive already packed. The two facilities serve different points in the logistics chain: CFS for consolidation and deconsolidation, CY for container staging and storage.
