Transshipment

The transfer of cargo from one vessel or transport mode to another at an intermediate port or hub en route to the final destination.

Definition

Transshipment occurs when goods are unloaded from one vessel at an intermediate port and loaded onto a different vessel to continue their journey to the final destination. This happens when there is no direct shipping service between the origin and destination, or when it is more economical to route through a hub port. The goods may spend hours or days at the transshipment port but are not imported into that country — they remain in customs transit.

Why It Matters

Not every port pair has a direct shipping service. Qatar's Hamad Port, for example, may not have direct services from every origin port worldwide. In such cases, goods are routed through hub ports — Jebel Ali (Dubai), Salalah (Oman), or Singapore — where they are transferred to a vessel serving Qatar. Transshipment adds 2 to 7 days to transit time and introduces a risk of delays at the transfer point.

Direct vs Transshipment

Direct services are faster and reduce handling risk. Transshipment services are more widely available and often cheaper. The choice depends on the urgency of the shipment, the value and fragility of the goods, and the cost differential. Shipping lines publish their routing — shippers should verify whether a quoted service is direct or involves transshipment.
