Transit Time

Transit time is the elapsed time from when goods depart the origin (loading onto a vessel, aircraft, or vehicle) to when they arrive at the destination. In ocean shipping, transit time is typically quoted port-to-port. For door-to-door shipments, total transit includes origin inland transport, port handling, ocean voyage, destination port handling, customs clearance, and inland delivery. Each segment adds to the overall timeline.

Transit time directly affects inventory planning, working capital, and customer satisfaction. Longer transit times require higher safety stock levels and more working capital tied up in goods in transit. For perishable goods, transit time determines remaining shelf life upon arrival. Importers in Qatar must factor transit times into procurement cycles — sea freight from China averages 18 to 22 days, from Europe 12 to 18 days, and from India 5 to 8 days.

Ocean transit times depend on route (direct service vs transhipment), vessel speed, port congestion at origin and destination, and weather conditions. Air freight typically takes 1 to 3 days for the flight plus 1 to 3 days for ground handling and customs at each end. Road freight within the GCC varies — Qatar to Dubai is approximately 6 to 8 hours, Qatar to Riyadh approximately 7 to 9 hours via Abu Samra border crossing.
