Demurrage

A charge imposed when a loaded container remains at a port terminal beyond the allowed free time after vessel arrival, incentivising timely cargo collection.

Definition

Demurrage is a fee levied by the shipping line when an importer fails to collect their container from the port within the allocated free time period (typically 3 to 7 days after vessel discharge). The charge accrues daily and escalates over time. Demurrage compensates the terminal operator for the space occupied by the uncollected container, which could otherwise be used for new arriving cargo.

Why It Matters

Demurrage charges can accumulate rapidly — rates at major ports range from 50 to 200 USD per container per day, escalating after extended periods. For importers in Qatar, delays in customs clearance, missing documentation, or slow coordination with inland transport can easily push containers past the free time window. A single week of demurrage on 10 containers can cost thousands of dollars.

Demurrage vs Detention

Demurrage applies while the full container sits inside the port terminal. Detention applies once the container has been collected from the port but not returned empty to the shipping line within the allowed time. Together, these charges are commonly referred to as D&D. Importers should plan customs clearance and inland transport to minimise both charges.
