Break Bulk Cargo

Non-containerised cargo loaded individually onto a vessel as separate pieces — such as bags, crates, drums, machinery, or steel beams.

Definition

Break bulk cargo refers to goods that are shipped as individual units rather than inside containers. These items are loaded directly onto a vessel's deck or into its holds using cranes. Common break bulk cargo includes bagged commodities (rice, cement, sugar), crated machinery, steel products, timber, vehicles, and project cargo that is too large or heavy for standard containers.

Why It Matters

While containerisation has transformed global shipping, some cargo types simply do not fit in containers. Heavy industrial equipment, oversized construction components, and very large volumes of bulk commodities are more efficiently and economically shipped as break bulk. In Qatar, major construction and infrastructure projects frequently require break bulk shipments of structural steel, prefabricated modules, and heavy machinery.

Handling Requirements

Break bulk operations require specialised port equipment (heavy-lift cranes, spreader bars), skilled labour for securing cargo, and careful stowage planning to ensure vessel stability. Loading and unloading times are significantly longer than for containerised cargo. At Hamad Port, dedicated break bulk berths handle these specialised shipments.
