Hub and Spoke

A distribution model where cargo flows through a central hub before being routed to final destinations, concentrating sorting and consolidation at one point.

Definition

The hub-and-spoke model organises transport networks around a central facility (the hub) connected to multiple outlying locations (the spokes). Goods from various origins are collected and transported to the hub, where they are sorted, consolidated, and dispatched to their final destinations along spoke routes. This contrasts with point-to-point networks where each origin connects directly to each destination.

Why It Matters

Hub-and-spoke networks achieve efficiency through consolidation. Instead of running partially filled vehicles between every pair of locations, all goods flow through the hub where they are combined into full loads for each spoke route. This reduces the total number of vehicle trips and improves capacity utilisation. In Qatar's logistics landscape, Doha serves as the natural hub, with spoke routes radiating to Al Khor, Al Wakra, Mesaieed, Dukhan, and Al Shamal.

Trade-Offs

The hub adds a handling step and potential delay — goods must be unloaded, sorted, and reloaded. For time-sensitive shipments, direct point-to-point may be preferable despite lower vehicle utilisation. The optimal network design for a business in Qatar depends on delivery volume per destination, distance between locations, time sensitivity, and cost constraints.
