Distribution Centre (DC)

A distribution centre differs from a traditional warehouse in its emphasis on throughput speed rather than long-term storage. Goods arrive, are sorted or processed (labelled, kitted, repackaged), and are dispatched — often within 24 to 48 hours. DCs are strategically located to minimise delivery times to target markets and typically feature high-bay racking, conveyor systems, and multiple loading docks.

As consumer expectations shift toward faster delivery, distribution centres have become the backbone of modern supply chains. In Qatar, DCs serve as the critical link between international imports arriving at Hamad Port or Hamad International Airport and the domestic market. A well-positioned DC can reach any point in Qatar within a few hours, enabling same-day or next-day delivery promises.

A warehouse is optimised for storage duration and capacity. A distribution centre is optimised for speed and order processing. Warehouses may hold inventory for weeks or months; DCs aim to move goods through in hours or days. Many modern facilities combine both functions, with a warehouse section for bulk reserve stock and a DC section for active fulfilment.
