Pallet Racking

A structural storage system of horizontal beams and vertical frames designed to store goods on pallets at multiple height levels.

Definition

Pallet racking is the backbone of modern warehouse storage. The system consists of upright frames connected by horizontal beams, creating shelves at various heights where palletised goods are placed and retrieved using forklifts or reach trucks. Racking maximises vertical space utilisation, turning a warehouse with limited floor area into a high-capacity storage facility.

Types of Racking

Selective racking provides direct access to every pallet position — the most common type. Drive-in racking allows forklifts to enter the rack structure for high-density storage of uniform products. Push-back racking uses gravity to feed pallets forward as others are removed. Pallet flow racking uses inclined rollers for automatic FIFO rotation. The choice depends on product variety, turnover rate, and space constraints.

Capacity Planning

Racking capacity is determined by beam load ratings, upright frame heights, and floor load-bearing capacity. In Qatar, warehouse ceiling heights of 8 to 12 metres are common, allowing four to six pallet levels in selective racking configurations. Proper racking design considers aisle widths (for forklift turning radius), sprinkler clearances, and seismic safety standards.
